As Annie and I get nearer the end of our novel, one piece of writing advice that I see everywhere is to avoid cliches.
Thinking about our plot, I’ve tried hard to avoid them, but with the last plot twist, I feel like we’ve come across one that is unavoidable. The important point being that Annie and I have a single overarching idea of what we want to convey, and the “potential cliche” helps sell that idea.
I don’t want to say too much or really give anything away, but I don’t want to write around it, or otherwise change our story just to avoid all cliches. We have already worked on trying to reduce how cliche it feels, and hopefully, since the story isn’t littered with them, we will be able to get away with it.
What do you think, is it really so wrong to have a cliche in a story?
