Budget Problems

I’ve been wanting to write this for a while, though it isn’t something I think most people want or need to read. I hope to look back on this one day, and be in a much better position than I am now.

Without giving any dollar amounts away, here’s what my current monthly budget looks like.

I am paid for my work with rocketgenius, and that is 100% of my income.

Expense Percent
Taxes 42%
Rent 22%
Food 12%
Other* 8%
Communications 6%
Wedding Savings 6%
Debt 4%
Total 100%

*Other constitutes clothing, entertainment, software, camera stuff, video games, web hosting, domain names.

For all of you paying attention, that’s my entire pay each month. I am not currently saving anything extra, and any time my food, communications (phone/internet), other go up, I am left with less to put towards the wedding, debt or taxes (which only delays problems).

Why are my taxes so high? I am currently paying back taxes and trying to keep up with my current taxes. It takes a frustrating amount from my pay to do this.

Of course, life would be easier if I could mitigate some of these factors by reducing my expenses or finding ways to increase my monthly income, but everything requires time and/or energy. I am currently not interested in creating the unbalanced life that I lead before, and my relationship is going really well, so I don’t want to jeopardize that just so my financial situation is a bit more comfortable.

I constantly think back to my time blogging and long for the enjoyment I received in writing, speaking and engaging other in the community, but I also remember the long hours, and low pay. I am not certain what I am going to do, but I feel like I’m also lucky to be in my situation, as I know others have it far worse. At the end of the day, I just wanted to write this out so I have a record of it.

I hope, in a year or two from now, I’ll have lines in my budget for saving.
