One of my favourite books as a child was The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss. While its strong environmental message really made me aware as a child, I doubt the movie would have the same effect for this generation of children. The message is so watered down through a romantic story, and some very lame musical numbers. I can say that the quality of the animation was great, and that overall I enjoyed the movie, but as with many things from my childhood, I expected revisiting it would be amazing, but left disappointed.
I went and saw the 3D version, and while I am happy to say that they didn’t seem to create scenes just to take advantage of the technology, the 3D was pretty light feeling. If you want to see this movie in the theatres, skip the 3D showing as it isn’t worth the extra money (though the 3D trailer for the next Despicable Me rocked!).
Overall, I give the movie a strong three out of five, and recommend those with children under ten or a child’s heart revisit this take on a classic story.
